Laser scar removal

Published: 2006-08-02 – Updated: 2007-11-27

If you have had a severe or even superficial injury, the healing process may have left a scar. Its appearance depends not only on the type and extent of the wound but also on the individual's disposition to form scars. Scars are removed for not only cosmetic reasons but also due to possible discomfort caused by the scar's location.

The scar removal procedure

Various types of laser are used to remove or modify scars.

The computer-operated laser beam is aimed at the scar and small vessels running through the scar are closed. Laser scar removal is a patient friendly procedure since it does not result in any open wounds, the healing process is fast and no other treatment or check-up is necessary. The physical properties of laser beams allow its intensive action to be directed at the targeted area.

Hypertrophic scars can be treated with a laser. After a short application, a small scab appears, which later peels off.

Hypertrophic and keloidal scars both can be removed by a sclerolaser that may be combined with an injectable Diprophos. The sclerolaser also is effective for turning red scars pale.

Before the procedure, depressed scars may be treated with a hylauronic solution that elevates them to the level of the adjacent skin's surface.

Why laser scar removal Prague?

Prague has many attractive features for those considering laser scar removal abroad. Its location in Central Europe is easy to access; its mild climate is conducive to healing and its experienced clinics and laser scar removal surgeons ensure you'll receive the best possible care. Laser scar removal Prague costs are often much more affordable than in the UK or with the NHS. Are you a good candidate for laser scar removal?

The general rule is that the newer (more reddish) the scar is, the more satisfactory is the final result. Therefore, if you want to have your scar removed, don’t wait.

Make sure that your expectations are realistic. Old scars won't disappear without a trace; however, they will appear substantially flatter, paler and softer. See the results of laser scar removal in our before and after picture gallery.

Untanned skin is another factor that significantly determines the final effect.

Before the laser scar removal procedure

During the first consultation, your surgeon will check the state of your scar and decide whether it is suitable for laser treatment. If you have large scars to be removed, please take into consideration that the procedure will have to be repeated several times.

Anesthesia

Desensitisation is not necessary for minor scar treatment. You will probably only feel a slight burning. In cases of larger scars, desensitisation of the to-be-treated area may be convenient. Notify your surgeon of any allergies to drugs you suffer from, especially if you have ever experienced an allergeric reaction to Mezocaine, Lidocaine, etc.

Desensitising ointment may be used to numb the area. If you are extra sensitive to pain, you can ask for this kind of anesthesia.

After the laser scar removal procedure

Immediately after the laser treatment, a small, attrition-like lesion appears in the treated area. This is soon covered with a small scab. The treated area is sometimes protected with an adhesive plaster that may be removed in two or three days. It may not be used if the procedure was small.

The treated area may be slightly reddish, however, it will turn pale quite quickly.

It is vital to protect the treated area from sun exposure for at least one month. We recommend using sun-block creams. It is also advisable to keep the scar moist with a healing ointment recommended by your surgeon.

No other precautions are necessary.

In case of any undesirable symptoms, such as inflammation or pain, contact your surgeon immediately.

Results of laser scar removal

The effect of laser scar removal treatment is progressive; meaning the results will become visible within a few months. The scar turns paler and flatter and progressively adapts to the colour of your skin. If you were realistic in your expectations for laser scar removal, you will probably be satisfied with the results.

Will steroid injections flatten thick skin?

Hi,

I have a scar on my forehead which has healed well, but has 'thickened' tissue underneath it which has caused a raised bump. It now looks like I have a permanent bump on my head due to the lump.

I have been to see a plastic surgeon, and he said they cannot remove the lump, as there is nothing to remove - only thickened skin which is causing the raise.

I have been referred for steroid injections - will this shrink the thickened skin under the scar permantently? What is the success rate?

Is there any other treatment I can try to reduce the thickened skin? I have tried all oils/ silicone gels/ plasters etc.

Thanks
