Almost all of us have some irregularities in the shape or size of our nose. If the irregularity of shape, a hump, a too long or a too wide nose causes an aesthetic defect, cosmetic surgery is able to help.
With Rhinoplasty, we can correct the shape of the nose and deflections from its axis. There is often a pleasant secondary effect of the operation – the improvement of breathing. The aesthetic effects are significant, with an important influence on the mental state of the patient. An thorough consultation with your plastic surgeon is necessary before the operation, and the patient’s motives and the expected results must be made clear . Before the treatment, it is also necessary to undergo a preliminary lab test. It is possible to undergo pre-operative examination at our clinic or at your doctor´s.
We do nose surgery under general anesthesia. If it is our client´s wish, it is also possible to use local anesthesia. The operation does not leave visible external scars, the approach to the tissues is from the nostrils. During the surgery procedure, soft tissues are separated from supportive framework of bones and cartilages, and the nose is remodelled to correct the deformities. The treatment lasts 1 – 2 hours, depending on the scope of modelling. Smaller treatment includes only modelling of soft nasal tissues without sculpting the bones. The operation and post-operation recovery is mostly painless. We recommend to stay at the clinic overnight after your treatment. After operation, nasal packs are placed into the nostrils for 3 to 5 days and plaster fixation is put on the nose for 2 weeks. After removal of the fixation, it is necessary to be very careful before of the bones reattach, that is, for 6 to 8 weeks. Slight swelling can last for few weeks after the removal of fixation.
During the first weeks after treatment, the patient is to perform pressure massages which are important for the final shape of his/her nose. The nose shape is considered to be final after at least 6, usually 12 months. The effect is lasting.
At LAUREA clinic, it is mostly Doc. MUDr. Jan Válka, who deals with nose operations /rhinoplasty/, an author of an expert publication and many specialized articles on this topic. He is an internationally recognized plastic surgeon – rhinoplasty expert. Doc. MUDr. Válka has operated at LAUREA clinic for many years and is popular expressly with foreign but also with domestic clients. His great advantage and guarantee of many successful operations is not only his surgical knowledge but also his experience and aesthetic feeling.
Nose is a distinctive feature of every human face. Undesirable nose shape can substantially influence your look. Nose job can deal with this problems in an efficient way.
What is a nose job?
Nose job or rhinoplasty is one of the most common but technically most difficult procedures of plastic surgery. It is available to all people once the development of their nose is finished. The surgery can reduce or increase the size of your nose, correct the shape of the tip or the bridge or narrow span of the nostrils.
Surgery
Anesthesia
In most cases, nose job is done under general anesthesia. However it can be done under local anesthesia as well, the decision depends on the extent of the treatment and on the choice of you and your surgeon. With local anesthesia, the nose will be numbed with an injection, you will not feel any pain during the treatment. However, the surgery can be individually more or less annoying. With general anesthesia, you will sleep during the whole surgery. The patient is usually requested not to drink, eat or smoke for about 6 hours before general anesthesia and may need an overnight stay in hospital.
Procedure of nose job (rhinoplasty)
Nose job usually takes one or two hours, more complicated treatments can last longer.
Many plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty from within the nose, making the incision inside the nostrils. The resulting scar is invisible. Others prefer an “open” procedure, especially in more complicated cases. In this case, the incision is lead across the columella, with resulting scar on this place. The scar is very discrete. During the normal surgery procedure, the skin is separated from its supportive framework, cartilages are partly removed and eventually sculpted, nasal hump is removed and bone part of the nose narrowed, if desired. Finally, the resulting shape of the nose is stabilized with bandage and plaster fixation. Nasal packs are placed into the nostrils.
Are you a suitable candidate for nose job – rhinoplasty?
Best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for improvement of their look. If you are in a good state of health, psychologically stable and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate. Rhinoplasty can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for remodelling purposes to correct birth defects or breathing problems. Age may also be a consideration. The surgery should not be performed before the development and growth of the person is finished. It is around 18 years of age in case of men, 16 years in case of women.
Before rhinoplasty
During first consultation, your surgeon will explain the operational procedure in detail, assess your case and discuss with you the possibilities of surgery and choose the most appropriate one for you. Be sure to tell the surgeon if you have had any previous nose surgeries or an injury to your nose, even if it was many years ago. You must also inform the doctor if you suffer from breathing difficulties. Be sure to discuss your nose job expectations frankly with your surgeon. He or she should be equally frank to you, describing your possibilities, risks and limits of every procedure.
It is assumed that no acute illness (viral illness, cold etc.) occurred in the period preceding the surgery. Inform the surgeon about any illness. While making the preparations, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery and to help out for a few days, if needed.
After the nose surgery
Immediately after the surgery, a small plaster splint will be placed on your nose to stabilize it. It will be removed after approximately 7 or 14 days, depending on the type of the treatment. During the first days after surgery, count with smaller or bigger swelling of the face, especially in the area of eyelids. The swelling can be easily reduced with cold compresses. Smaller swelling can last for weeks or months. Your nose may feel stuffy for some time, which is caused by swelling of nasal mucous membrane. For a week, it is not recommended to drivel. Most patients do not complain of bigger pain.
Most clients can return to job when the plaster is removed, it means after approximately two weeks.
Heavy physical activity is not recommended for about three weeks.
How long will the effect of nose surgery (rhinoplasty) last?
The results of the operation are lasting. It is however necessary to realize that the final results will stabilize no sooner than a year after the operation.

How to choose a plastic surgeon specialised in aesthetic plastic surgery?
- Make sure you have a board certified plastic surgeon. (If you are in doubt visit the websites of the Society of Aesthetic Surgery and the Society of Plastic Surgery.) Visit these websites if you don’t find the information on our directory in a doctor’s listing.
- Ask for before/after pictures of the operation you demand. Not all operations are on the same level of complexity. There are simple ones and there are those that require a very high skill. One of those is for example rhinoplasty.
- The photo of a plastic surgeon is not that important. A lot of excellent specialist don’t look like a doctor from a TV soup opera.
- Be aware that excellent plastic surgeon need basically two things. Experience and skillful hands, a gift from God. The education on it’s own is not enough.
- Do a lot of research. Testimonials from your friends might be also helpful.
- The best surgeons might not be those that let you travel shortly after operation. There are some procedures that will require you to stay in Czech for 1-2 week or even more. For example abdominoplasty.
The best plastic surgeons have usually schedule full for 6 moths ahead. Very rarely you might get a consultation or an operation within a month from now or less.
President of Czech Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, recommends:
Asc. Prof. Marketa Duskova, M.D., Ph.D., President of Czech Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, recommends:
- Your chosen specialist should be a certified plastic surgeon. See the list of plastic surgeons that are members and the list of plastic surgeons that are certified members of Czech Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
- It is reasonable to pass the whole process with the same plastic surgeon, i.e. the initial consultation, examination, the surgery, and post-op care. It is good to stay in contact by phone or email the whole healing period.
Why to choose the Czech Plastic Surgery ?
The plastic surgery has had a long tradition here. In European continent the foundation of this medical branch is connected with the name of the great Czech, Academician Frantisek Burian. The treatment is on the high level and the prices are available for majority of interested persons. Among main advantages of Czech plastic surgery belongs the educational system that assures the quality of medical care.
What are the main features of Czech educational system?
In the Czech Republic there are 4 steps of training:
- At first a plastic surgeon trainee starts with theoretical studies and watching the surgeries,
- 2. then she/he assists to senior surgeon,
- 3. she/he continues with operating under supervision and assisting to senior surgeon 4.and finally she/he carries the surgery alone.
The training lasts at least 5 years and must be provided at accredited sites, where the trainee is going through all parts of plastic surgery. To become a fully board certified plastic surgeon, one must pass the qualifying examination, which is oral and practical. To application form for the examination the candidate must attach references of main tutors and a list of performed surgeries. There are types and number of compulsory operations.
If we compare the situation in other countries, such tutoring and conditions for obtaining of full qualification may be less detailed or even sometimes missed.
How to choose a plastic surgery clinic?
- Every plastic surgery facility or clinic in Czech Republic has to have “top qualified plastic surgeon”, a warrantor. Such plastic surgeon has to be certified for this post by state which means by Society of Aesthetic Surgery and Society of Plastic surgery. Warrantor is guaranteeing the level of medical care in the clinic. But be aware that this doctor doesn’t have to be the one performing your surgery. Make sure you know who is the plastic surgeon performing your surgery.
- As we said above, you should search for experienced and skillful specialist. Beside that there is the medical equipement that is needed for the surgery you want. For an endoscopic face lift or neck lift you need the endoscop. For laser treatment you need the laser. But for a lot of procedures you don´t need such equipment and the skill of surgeon might be more important.
- A lot of surgeons perform surgeries at more than one facility.
Agencies and providers of cosmetic surgery packages
Going for plastic surgery on your own
You may want to arrange the cosmetic surgery trip to Czech on your own. It is simple. You can simply purchase an airplane ticket, accommodation and airport pick up on the internet within 30 minutes. Before that you should get a date for consultation or possible operation from a chosen plastic surgery specialist. Some time a clinic where you wish to undergo the treatment may recommend an accomodation or apartment near the facility as well as an airport pick up.
You might decide, you don’t want to travel alone. Well, bring a husband and send him play golf. There are more then 70 golf courses in Czech. Bring a friend and send her shopping, siteseeing, you name it…
Czech is far from a third world country. You don’t have to be afraid to get a taxi from the airport. Also, you may contact us if you wish to recommend an appartment of accommodation. The bottom line is:find a surgeon and give him a call or write an email and go from that.
Purchasing an all inclusive plastic surgery package through a middleman
Purchasing an all inclusive cosmetic surgery package through a middleman may be more expensive but you will be taken care of from your home airport on. You may have someone to chat with on the way. Some of the providers have undergone a treatment them selves. You may feel better not going alone. Agents usually know their way around the Prague and Czech. On the other hand, they do what they do for profit. Also, agents will probably recommend you only a clinic or plastic surgeon they deal with. The bottom line is: decide if you are willing to pay more for everything being taken care of for you.
We do not list the agencies here at this time. However you will find them on major search engines if you look for plastic surgery in Prague.
Czech is the home of the first plastic surgeons
The foundations of plastic surgery were laid by Czech professor Frantisek Burian in 1912. Three years later he launched the first plastic surgery ambulance in the world. Burian developed many operation procedures and techniques that are the basis of many modern plastic surgeries over the world.
Leading cosmetic surgery provider The Hospital Group have seen an immense growth in the number of men striving to achieve a supple body shape, with the number of liposuction operations growing largely during the last year. The procedure, which contours parts of the body by removing fat, has rocketed in popularity by 117% since August 2009.
Last year, soccer ace Ronaldo was reported to have undergone liposuction to remove fat from his stomach and in line with this revelation, The Hospital Group have seen a massive increase in men wanting fast, dramatic results to achieve a trim and toned body shape.
Previously British men were keen to slim line their chests and avoid the Simon Cowell man boobs look. However surgeons have recorded a fall in demand for the gynaecomastia operation this year. Now men want to lose those love handles and get a washboard stomach instead.
Medical Director of Aesthetic Surgery at The Hospital Group, Mario Russo, said cosmetic surgery procedures are no longer such a taboo with men and that increasing pressure in the job market could be one of the reasons why men want to banish flabby tummies during 2010.
He said: “We are seeing an increasing number of men who don’t have the time to achieve such amazing body results by just hitting the gym. This, combined with increasingly tough workplace environments means men want to be looking and feeling their best, so they can perform at their best.
“Lots of celebrities are turning to cosmetic surgery to fix imperfections, with amazing results and men are no longer scared to strive for the same body shape.
“Liposuction and liposculpture provides the perfect way for men to feel good about their bodies again.”
The Hospital Group offers a number of cosmetic surgery procedures to restore body confidence, including rhinoplasty (nose job) abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) teeth whitening and bariatric procedures, as well as rejuvenating non-surgical treatments such as dermal fillers and chemical peels to turn back the clock.
In Poland, Warsaw currently has the highest number of cosmetic and plastic surgeon specialists, including well-known ones. The most popular destinations for cosmetic surgery in Poland, aside from Warsaw, are Krakow, Gdansk and Szczecin. Breast augmentation and rhinoplasty are probably the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in Poland, followed by liposuction.

1) Advantages of cosmetic and plastic surgery in Poland
- Prices for plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures can be anywhere from 40% to 70% less than prices in the UK or US
- Extremely high standards combined with low prices and a convenient location in central Europe means Poland has become one of the favorite and most trusted cosmetic and plastic surgery destinations.
- More and more Polish surgeons speak English and also German
- Many of Poland’s cities are UNESCO listed and the Polish countryside is mountainous and full of large, beautiful lakes.
- The climate of Poland, Europe’s 9th largest country, is temperate.
- From the UK, a flight to Warsaw, the most popular plastic surgery destination in Poland, takes only 2.5 hours.
Most of the major European airlines fly to Poland, as well as several low cost airlines such as SkyEurope, Ryanair, EasyJet, Norwegian and Germanwings.
Not only will a trip to Poland save you money on your plastic surgery, but you can also take advantage of the beautiful and historic parts of the country. A good number of Polish cities, and sections of cities, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including Warsaw, Wroclaw and Krakow, where there are also many cosmetic surgery clinics.
2) What it takes to become a certified plastic surgeon in Poland
In Poland, the standards of the medical sector have risen dramatically since joining the EU in 2004.
Dr. Ireneusz Latkowski is a plastic surgery specialist and senior assistant at the Plastic Surgery Hospital in Polonica Zdroj. Established in 1951, it is the oldest center for plastic surgery in Poland. He says that in order to become a plastic surgeon in Poland, one must finish medical school, which takes six years, followed by an internship of 1.5 years. The future surgeon must then continue by completing two specialization degrees. The first one must be in either general surgery or children’s surgery, and this training lasts for 5 years. A second specialization in plastic surgery must then be completed, and this lasts from 3 to 5 years, the longer the better, Dr. Latkowski points out. In addition, many Polish plastic surgeons train in Western nations, such as Germany or the UK, as part of their supervised studies for the surgery specializations. More and more Polish surgeons are also working part time outside of Poland, in places like the UK and Sweden, proving that their skills and qualifications are just as high, if not higher, as those required by Western standards.
3) How to choose a plastic surgery clinic in Poland
Dr. Sylwia Daniluk, a Polish plastic surgery specialist and member of the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, says that recently, the requirements for becoming a qualified plastic surgeon in Poland have been changed. After medical school graduation, there will be only one degree that a future surgeon must complete, but it will take a longer amount of time than the two separate specialization degrees currently take.
The lower costs of surgery or treatment is likely the main reason you are going to travel to Poland. However, as Dr. Latkowski points out, price should not be the first determining factor in choosing a surgeon or clinic.
Do thorough research and compare various different specialists and clinics. It is wise to contact the surgeon or intermediary to ask for a reference or patient testimonials. In fact, word of mouth may be one of the best factors to consider, according to Dr. Latkowski.
“Nowadays marketing isn’t a problem, so the most important thing is the opinion of another patient who has experience in that clinic,” says Dr. Latkowski. “It’s not important what beautiful photos the doctor has or what kind of website there is.”
But also do make sure that the surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon, and check to see what medical associations he or she is a member of, including the Polish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons and the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. A clinic may be newly constructed and very modern and hygienic in its equipment and technological capabilities but make sure that in addition to this, the actual surgeon or surgeons at the clinic are established. Your goal is to find a combination of both of these elements.
According to Dr. Latkowski, many of the patients who came to Poland for plastic surgery five or ten years ago were from Germany, so it was important for Polish surgeons to speak German. But in the years since Poland has joined the EU, more patients are arriving from the UK and the US, as well as other countries, making it necessary for Polish surgeons to communicate in English.
Look into the options for insurance. Purchasing travel insurance may only cover you abroad for something like a broken leg, so find out if the clinic is insured.
Ask about options for post-surgery treatment, in the case that, for example, scar tissue or an implant hardens. Does the clinic make any guarantees? Find out how long the clinic suggests you remain at the clinic post-op before traveling back home. For certain surgeries, you might need to remain at the clinic for one to two weeks.
Make sure that the clinic does not only take cash. Acceptance of credit cards, in addition to cash, is a positive sign.
If you are using an intermediary (a medical tourist agency) find out if they have received an ISO 9000:2001 Certificate. This is an international mark of high quality service. Find other patients on Internet message boards or forums who have used this intermediary and see what they have to say. Ask them questions about their experience.
4) Arranging plastic surgery on your own
You can arrange cosmetic surgery in Poland without the assistance of a medical broker or other intermediary. Once you have done the research, are satisfied with the surgeon’s qualifications and experience and have heard positive feedback from previous patients of the surgeon, you can book a date for the surgery through the clinic. When you have the date or dates for the surgery, make sure you allow yourself enough time before and after your surgery. Using these dates, you can purchase your flight tickets online, either flying straight into Poland, or via Berlin, a cost-effective option. Accommodation can be easily found online as well, or ask the clinic for a recommendation of a nearby hotel or apartment. If you wish to rent a car, this can also be researched and confirmed online. Ask your surgeon and/or the clinic’s contact person as many questions as you need to when planning your trip.
Using an intermediary to plan your trip for you can be more expensive, but they may also take care of all the little details, from airport pickup to post-surgery caretaker in your apartment, so you don’t have to worry about anything. And again, before booking, do some research to see if you can find anyone else who has used their services. When it comes to something as important as traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery, word of mouth is of the utmost importance.
