Michal Čierny, MD,PhD  has been performing advanced laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery in Traumatological Hospital in Brno. Since 2005 he has been a member of the newly formed Bariatric section of both The Czech Surgical and The Czech Obesitologic Society. The bariatric surgery has been performed in his hospital sice 2003, starting with the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, further with laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection and finally since 2006 starting with the first laparoscopic Roux Y gastric bypass. A temporary endoscopic procedure offered to obese patients to help their keeping of restrictive diet and wieght reductuion is the intragastric baloon .

The bariatric surgery (obesity surgery, weight loss surgery, Adipositätchirurgie) requires a close multidisciplinary cooperation of an obesitologist, psychologist, nutrition therapeutist and a specialised bariatric surgeon. Unlike in cosmetic and esthetic surgery the main goal of bariatric operation is reduction of health risks associated to morbid obesity, not the cosmetics and therefore the indication of the bariatric procedure has to be based on consensual result of all mentioned specialists.  The bariatric surgery has been rapidly growing field of surgery with great impact of the minimally invasive approach of laparoscopic surgery on the safety of bariatry within the last decade. Yet, the strict indication criteria for the  surgical treatment of obesity has been unchanged for more than 25 years. The main indication criteria for obesity surgery are: BMI above 40 or BMI above 35 in case with serious comorbidities related to obesity. Before the operation a  period of conservative therapy (diet, energy expenditure, lifestyle changes, cognitive-behavioral and psychological therapy, obesitologic and medical treatment) is required.

Obese patients before and after a batriatric operation and all who are interested in the surgical treatment of obesity are offered to enter a "Banding klub ČR" ( banding club - club of patients having a gastric band ). The club members  have their own actions, happenings and various entertainment.
